Leading global online learning platform Coursera revealed a sneak peek of the report on the impact of micro-credentials in the Philippine academic and labor sectors. The report emphasized how these industry-aligned, flexible, short programs are the wave of the future and highly valued by employers, especially when stacked on top of full degrees.
Known for making professional certificates and full degrees from top universities more accessible online, Coursera highlighted in its 2026 Micro-Credentials Impact Report that 85% of Filipino graduates who earned a micro-credential secured a role aligned to their field within 12 months. In fact, 77% of Filipino employers say candidates with micro-credentials move faster through hiring pipelines.

“The Philippines is showing real leadership in building a skills-first higher education system, with CHED’s CMO creating a trusted pathway for flexible, workforce-aligned learning. This regulatory clarity is critical – aligning universities, employers, and learners around credentials that are recognized, stackable, and tied to real workforce needs,” said Anthony Salcito, Global Head of Enterprise, Coursera. “iPeople Inc. is a powerful example of this vision in action, embedding industry-recognized micro-credentials into degree programs and flexible certification pathways so students and working professionals can build practical, job-ready skills alongside academic learning. This is exactly the kind of model that can expand access, improve career readiness, and help prepare Filipino talent for a fast-changing digital economy.”
“Filipino employers no longer rely only on school reputation or degrees, but are looking for verifiable, job-ready skills—proof of what a candidate can do on day one,” explained Ana Maria Bongato, former Executive Director for Talent Development at the IT & Business Process Association of the Philippines (IBPAP). “Micro-credentials are designed to be more focused and accessible than traditional degrees and get people job-ready faster in growing areas like AI.”
The full global report will be unveiled in the coming weeks.

Now, the network is Coursera’s third largest campus partner worldwide and together, they support the learning needs of 45,000 Filipino students across six schools. How this impacts digital-first learners
This iPeople-Coursera collaboration has proven to be a transformative solution for the iPeople schools’ students, including those of Mapúa Malayan Digital College (MMDC). This premier digital-first college, known for advocating vulnerable working students, offers flexible and fully online learning with its BS Information Technology and Business Administration courses, and employs the modern Flipped Classroom strategy that deviates from the traditional classroom setup.
Here, students are expected to first encounter new concepts through readings and online lectures or videos. Synchronous sessions with mentors are then dedicated to demonstrations, activities, and attempts, helping students fully comprehend the concept and better retain this new knowledge.
As MMDC leverages Coursera as its main learning management system, its students have access to the global platform’s AI-powered assistants. Coursera aids MMDC students in understanding learning materials through AI Coach that can provide practice exercises and deepen knowledge through AI Dialogue that allows students to have immersive, personalized learning experiences with question-based discussions.
MMDC further makes education accessible to different kinds of learners through its Certification Programs. These micro-credentials are particularly designed for non-graduate professionals and career shifters aiming to gain the necessary skills and credentials they need to advance in their current fields, switch careers, or unlock new opportunities in high growth industries like virtual assistance, digital marketing, data analytics, and English language training.
Evangeline Adan, a logistics manager for a semiconductor company and an Industrial Engineering graduate from Mapúa University, attests to the significance of the MMDC Certification Program. She is currently enrolled in MMDC’s Certification Program IBM Data Analytics emphasizing her desire to grow professionally and stay competitive in today’s rapidly evolving digital workplace.
“I have already started applying my learnings in my current role by creating dashboards and improving the way reports and data insights are presented,” revealed Adan, adding that data-driven decision-making is now a must in various industries. “My goal is to transition into a data analyst role in the long term, and MMDC is helping me take the necessary steps to pursue this journey and secure my future.”
The iPeople and Coursera partnership’s impact on the MMDC community reflects the former’s leadership in adopting and leveraging technology in providing quality education to Filipinos. This progressive approach to learning earned iPeople two recognitions: Coursera’s Global Maximizing Impact Award in 2024 for advancing digital-first, job-ready education and Coursera’s APAC AI Innovation Award in 2025 for driving AI-powered learning transformation.
