We all need a side hustle these days, even if we have a 40 hour a week regular job, just to make ends meet. Sometimes, though, a side hustle ends up costing you money, time and your main job. So what’s the solution? Finding a side hustle that actually works for you and with your current employment.
Joel Marotti, senior managing partner at Vertical Media Solutions, posed the vital question: “[D]oes your side hustle make you better or just busier? People try to find a way to add to their income, but this should also be an exercise in sharpening skills you already use at work or expanding your professional network.”
Marotti shared that the most important thing is to carve out a sustainable model for your time.
“You will not be able to jump in and out of this while working a full-time job or you’ll risk getting fired from your primary source of income,” Marotti explained, urging to set realistic earning goals and allocate time in the evenings or weekends for that type of work.
With that in mind, here are four side hustles that actually work with a nine-to-five — seriously!

Freelancing
What is your professional expertise? Freelance it.
“Whatever it is you do — project management, accounting, design, writing or anything else — there are small businesses that could use your help but might not be able to afford a full-time hire,” Marotti said.
According to Marotti, freelance professional services can range a great deal, $50 to $250 an hour or more, depending on the field.
Teaching
Do you have a specialized area of expertise? Perhaps become a tutor or teacher, either in person or online, as your side hustle.
Marotti pointed out that online tutoring and teaching is skewed depending on the platform and subject, but you can likely receive no less than $20 an hour, but potentially $75 to $80 an hour.
“SAT prep, math and STEM subjects tend to be at the higher end,” Marotti added.
Notary
“There are a lot of folks in real estate and closings happen all the time … evenings, weekends, etcetera,” Marotti explained, highlighting the demand for a dependable notary loan signing agent. “You can attain a certification and go that route, as well.”
According to Marotti, notary loan signing agents are typically paid per signing, somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 to $200.
“Many agents are working five to 25 deals a week, so that can add up,” Marotti added.
Ghostwriting
If you’re a good writer and are talented with that very specific skill, Marotti suggested that there are plenty of places that would like you to draft content that’s useful in their space.
“Freelance writing is very person-specific,” Marotti said. “You can be paid anywhere from 25 to 50 cents a word or on a per-piece basis — roughly $50 to $150 depending on length and scope.”
