Pennsylvania State Police warn of rise in Midstate crypto warrant scams
(WHTM) — Pennsylvania State Police are warning Midstaters about a recent rise in crypto scams in the area.
Troopers say they have received several reports of scams in which victims are told by scammers over the phone that there is a warrant out for their arrest from the U.S. District Court, and they must post bail payments to crypto accounts through Bitcoin Coinhub kiosks.
The scammers, Troopers said, will keep the victim on the phone for hours, claiming there is a “gag” order, they can only speak to a “sheriff,” and victims are directed to different Bitcoin kiosks.
“Police will NEVER ask for payments through crypto accounts,” Tpr. Megan Frazer announced on X in response to the scams. “If you think you may have a warrant, call your local law enforcement to verify.”
