Vitalik Buterin says Bastian Aue is “executing much of” the Ethereum Foundation’s current restructuring.
-
The Ethereum Foundation is shifting toward a smaller, leaner model focused on privacy, decentralization, censorship resistance, and security.

Not TPS race but technologies like AI-assisted formal verification, FOCIL, EIP-8141, and specialized Layer-2 networks are expected to shape Ethereum’s next technical roadmap.
Ethereum Foundation:- When Vitalik Buterin announced on Sunday that the Ethereum Foundation is becoming leaner, making less ETH sells, restructuring itself, the debate about its merits or demerits exploded across crypto social media.
But hidden inside that announcement and behind the current executive strategy is another name: Bastian Aue.
While Vitalik has been the most popular in Ethereum Foundation, he said that Bastian, Ethereum Foundation’s co- Executive Director is the one “executing much of this transition.”
So, who is Bastian Aue?
Bastian officially stepped into the role of interim co-Executive Director at Ethereum Foundation in February 2026, taking reins from Tomasz. So, to say, the current mega transition happening in Ethereum Foundation is being driven by a 3-month old interm executive. But this is not his first involvement with Ethereum.
When Bastian joined as Executive Director in February, he had already spent years inside EF management. For years, Bastian had been working closely with people like Hsiao-Wei, Tomasz Stańczak, Josh Stark, Danny Ryan, Aya Miyaguchi, and Vitalik himself.
Bastian – Executive Behind Ethereum’s New Roadmap
Unlike most crypto executives, Bastian is not much of a public-facing personality.
His work has been mostly behind the scenes. In fact, when he took over as ED, he described his work himself as “illegible but essential work.”
That meant helping leadership make decisions, working with EF team leads, thinking through budgets. The latter is perhaps the domain he is now applying extensively to cut Ethereum’s team and leading its current lean transition.
