(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Many people may think they’re just bad with money, but the topic is often overwhelming, and research shows that when our brain feels overwhelmed, it tends to shut down. If money has ever felt stressful or overwhelming, you’re not alone. Bree Shellito, Director of Financial Well-Being at Ent Credit Union, joined FOX21 Morning News on Thursday, May 7, to discuss money strategies that work with your brain, instead of against it.
She offered three tips, but added that there are many more. She broke them down as follows:
Tip 1: Make it Visual
-
If you have to remember it, it’s easy to forget. Let your environment do some of the work for you.
-
Use technology.Set one reminder, like a bill due date or a quick balance check.
-
Low tech – use a sticky note on your coffee maker or even your front door.
-
Make your goals visible, rename accounts like “Bills” or “Fun,” so it’s instantly clear what’s available.
Tip 2: Pair it with a Habit
-
Pair money with something you already do. Our brains love routines.
-
While your coffee is brewing, check your balance.
-
During your Sunday wind-down, glance at upcoming bills.
-
Keep it tiny, even one minute counts!
-
Don’t add a new task; attach it to something you already do.
Tip 3: Get a “Money Buddy”
-
Don’t do it alone. A “money buddy” can make this feel a lot less stressful and help with accountability.
-
Sit next to a friend, partner, or even stay on the phone while you log in.
-
It’s not about advice, it’s about support and staying on track.
-
If no one’s available, even a quick text check-in can help.
Shellito said, “Bottom line, there is no one right to manage money. Really, whatever is working for you. Finding something that fits in with your routine, that you’re going to enjoy, is the most helpful.”
