The Indian stock market ended sharply lower on Tuesday, with the Sensex and Nifty each declining about 0.7% as escalating tensions in the Middle East lifted crude oil prices and dampened investor sentiment. The Sensex fell 561 points to close at 77,055, while the Nifty 50 lost 159 points to settle at 24,052.
The broader market also remained under pressure, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 indices falling as much as 1%. Among sectoral indices, Nifty Auto, PSU Bank, IT and Realty were the worst performers, declining up to 2% during the session. The market sell-off erased nearly Rs 3 lakh crore from the combined market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies.
